Sri Lanka’s newest sporting icon Rumesh Tharanga returned home yesterday to a hero’s reception after a breathtaking month that transformed him from a rising talent into one of the biggest names in world javelin.Fresh from a historic run of victories on the global stage, Tharanga was greeted by cheering supporters and well-wishers at the airport, celebrating an athlete who has taken Sri Lankan athletics into unprecedented territory. The 23-year-old arrived in the country carrying the momentum of three major international victories, including his latest triumph at the Doha Diamond League, where he produced another stunning performance with an 88.68m throw to defeat a star-studded field. The victory in Doha placed Tharanga ahead of some of the biggest names in the sport, including double world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra of India and other global medalists. After an uncharacteristic start that left him fourth following his opening three attempts, the Sri Lankan unleashed his winning throw on his fourth effort to once again prove his ability to deliver under pressure. It was the latest chapter in a remarkable month that began with history being rewritten in Rome. Tharanga stunned the athletics world with a massive 92.62m effort at the Diamond League, becoming the first athlete in two years to cross the 92-metre mark and instantly announcing himself as a genuine global contender. He continued his winning streak at the Ostrava Golden Spike in the Czech Republic, securing another World Athletics Gold-level victory with an 86.57m throw. He defeated Peters and South Africa’s Douw Smit to add another prestigious title to his growing collection.Tharanga’s performances have captured worldwide attention, with international media and fans closely following his rise. At Ostrava, he shared the spotlight at the pre-event press conference with Olympic champion Katie Moon, while in Doha he received special support from hundreds of Sri Lankan fans who filled the stadium with national flags and chants. The former Peterite, coached by Tony Prasanna, now holds all five longest throws recorded in 2026 and has climbed to eighth place on the all-time javelin list. He currently sits second in the world rankings the highest position ever achieved by a Sri Lankan athlete in any discipline while leading the Diamond League standings after outstanding results in Rabat, Rome and Doha. After a short break at home, Tharanga will turn his focus towards the Commonwealth Games in Scotland, where he aims to claim his first title at the event.
