Sri Lanka Chase Caribbean Glory as West Indies Fight for Revival
After a rain-disrupted ODI series and a closely fought T20I battle, West Indies and Sri Lanka return to the traditional format when the first Test of their two-match series begins at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Thursday. The series carries different levels of importance for the two teams, with West Indies looking to end a difficult period in Test cricket while Sri Lanka aims to strengthen its position in the World Test Championship race.West Indies enters the contest at the bottom of the current WTC standings after managing just one victory in eight matches. Playing at home, the Caribbean side will be desperate to rediscover confidence and begin a climb up the table.Sri Lanka, meanwhile, arrives as one of the leading contenders in the championship, currently occupying third place. However, Dhananjaya de Silva’s team knows that victories away from home will be vital if they are to remain in contention for a place in next year’s WTC final at Lord’s.“Every Test series is an opportunity for us to grow as a team and strengthen our identity,” West Indies head coach Daren Sammy said. “Sri Lanka are a quality side, so we’ll have to be at our best, but we’re excited about the challenge.”Sammy has urged his players to show greater discipline and resilience as they attempt to turn around West Indies’ fortunes in the longest format.“For us, it’s about playing with discipline, showing character when the game gets tough and representing the West Indies with pride,” he added.Sri Lanka’s current WTC position has been built largely on their 1-0 home series win over Bangladesh last year, but the team is aware that success overseas will determine their ultimate championship hopes. The two teams last met in Antigua in 2021, when both Tests ended in draws on batting-friendly pitches. This time, however, conditions are expected to provide a tougher examination, with recent domestic matches suggesting surfaces offering more pace, bounce and seam movement.West Indies are set to bring back wicketkeeper-batter Joshua Da Silva, who forced his way into contention after a strong domestic first-class campaign.“I went back to first-class cricket, scored runs and got another opportunity, so I’m trying to make the most of it,” Da Silva said. The hosts will rely on their powerful pace attack, with Alzarri Joseph returning to join Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph in an effort to put pressure on Sri Lanka’s batting lineup.Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers, led by Asitha Fernando and Vishwa Fernando in the absence of Dushmantha Chameera, will also look to take advantage of conditions expected to favour seam bowling. The visitors’ batting hopes will once again rest on captain Dhananjaya de Silva, experienced middle-order batter Dinesh Chandimal and the in-form Pathum Nissanka.Sri Lanka will be aiming to create history by securing their first-ever Test series victory in the Caribbean, while West Indies will be determined to protect their home reputation and begin a much-needed revival.
